| This section of the guide is drawn from information shared by ZosynPriest, Wowhead user Nethris, and a video provided by Wowhead user Krakenson. Screenshots and more detailed information will be added when possible.
Summoning Nightbane
[Nightbane] is a secret, summonable boss in the lower half of the Return to Karazhan dungeon. Players must first complete a time trial by clicking all five of the (НИП #115013)before their time runs out:- Upon opening the door after zoning into Karazhan, the following emote happens: "The strange chill of a dark presence winds through the air." This starts the timer.
- The party must click the first crystal, in the Opera Hall audience in front of the stage, within 8 minutes. This requires defeating the Opera Hall encounter and killing a substantial amount of trash backstage, in the pit, and in the audience.
- After the first crystal you will gain a buff, Отголосок Медива, with a 6min duration. This is now your timer. As you click crystals, it will add a stacking buff and 5 minutes to the time you had left on your buff.
- The Soul Fragments are located: 1 in the audience from Opera, 1 in the room on the left just before Maiden (you don’t need to kill her), 1 after you kill Moroes, 1 in the Spider Room (then you click the portal to the stairway), 1 after you kill Curator.
- If you click all the (НИП #115013) within the allotted time, after Curator, you run back to Nightbane's room and Medivh is there and he summons [Nightbane].
- When you speak to Medivh you get the Вечеринка в Каражане achievement.
- Once all crystals are clicked in the allotted time, your timer buff will change to Присутствие Медива and you will have 5 minutes to go speak with Medivh and summon Nightbane. The original Roleplay upon summoning Nightbane will play.
- Once you speak to Medivh and Nightbane is summoned, you are able to wipe without worry. He will still be there and shout at you as he continuously slays you.
Nightbane Tips and Strategy
The Nightbane encounter is a primarily single-target fight with three phases. Small adds are spawned every 20 seconds during Phases 1 and 3, and approximately every 10 seconds during Phase 2, but if the encounter is executed appropriately, there will only be 1-2 adds each time.
Throughout the entire encounter, Nightbane will cast Опаленная земля, targeting a random player and firing a projectile at their feet.- This projectile creates a large zone of Опаленная земля that will persist for 1 minute
- Player standing in the Опаленная земля take heavy periodic damage
- The Опаленная земля persists long enough that players may run out of room if the patches are placed haphazardly
- The party should stand in a clump at Nightbane's side, and move just out of the Опаленная земля each time it spawns
- The tank should kite Nightbane backwards, careful not to point the boss's head or tail at the party
- Опаленная земля is cast approximately every 20 seconds during Phases 1 and 3, and every 12 seconds during Phase 2
Nightbane cycles through three phases during the encounter: two ground phases, and one air phase. The final ground phase is the most difficult part of the encounter, so players should save Героизм/ Жажда крови/ Искажение времени for this part of the fight.
Phase 1: Ground Phase
Begin the fight with Nightbane at one end of the Master's Terrace.- Nightbane should be tanked next to the wall of the tower
- Like a typical dragon, Nightbane has a Удар хвостом mechanic and a Испепеляющее дыхание mechanic
- The party should be standing to Nightbane's side, near the edge of the balcony, loosely clumped together
- Each time Nightbane uses Опаленная земля, the whole party should shift slightly towards the other end of the Terrace
- Move as little as possible so as to conserve space on the Terrace
The mechanic with the most wipe potential is Воспламенение души, a debuff that Nightbane will cast on a random non-tank target every 25 seconds.- Воспламенение души lasts for 9 seconds and deals no damage
- When Воспламенение души expires, it will detonate, dealing damage equal to the target's current health total to all other players
- The actual Воспламенение души target does not take damage from this effect
- However, if the player is at high health when Воспламенение души expires, the damage to the rest of the party may be fatal
- Healers should not heal the Воспламенение души target unless absolutely necessary to prevent a death!
- The Воспламенение души target should step into Опаленная земля to lower their health before the debuff expires
- Be careful not to drop below 20% health, to avoid accidental deaths to incidental damage
The party must also manage the Горящие кости debuff, which Nightbane will apply to a random non-tank target approximately every 20 seconds.- Горящие кости is a dispellable debuff that is applied with 5 stacks, and lasts for 30 seconds
- Горящие кости will deal moderate DoT damage every 2 seconds, per stack, resulting in extremely heavy damage at the start of the debuff
- Approximately every 4 seconds, the targeted player will lose a stack of Горящие кости
- When Горящие кости expires or is dispelled, a [Restless Bones] add will be summoned for each stack of Горящие кости the player had at the time
- Healers should not immediately dispel Горящие кости!
- However, once Горящие кости reaches 1 stack remaining, it is safe to dispel it
- Only dispel Горящие кости above 1 stack if the targeted player will die otherwise
- The target should use a defensive CD when the debuff is applied, to mitigate the high damage
- Healers will need to keep the target alive with heavy healing in the first 8-10 seconds of the debuff
The Restless Bones that this spell summons are fairly trivial mobs, dealing only melee damage. However, when they die, they detonate with Костяная шрапнель.- Костяная шрапнель deals light damage to players within 8 yards of the Restless Bones
- This damage also leaves a debuff for 6 seconds, increasing the Physical damage taken by 75%
- The debuff will stack if multiple Restless Bones die at or near the same time
- This debuff can be fatal to the tank, especially in combination with Nightbane's melee damage
- This is why it is important to minimize the number of Restless Bones adds that spawn from each Горящие кости debuff
Every 12 seconds, Nightbane will attempt to cast Reverberating Shadows.- Reverberating Shadows will deal moderate Shadow damage to the party, and leave a powerful DoT effect for a few seconds
- Due to the high damage and the nature of the fight, successful Reverberating Shadows casts will likely cause a wipe, or cause the healer to run OOM, leading to wipes later in the fight
- The party should interrupt every Reverberating Shadows cast
- With a 12-second cooldown, this may take 2 players to reliably interrupt, and a third player to act as back-up
Periodically, Nightbane will buff himself with Средоточие мощи or Мощь преисподней.- Средоточие мощи occurs every 40 seconds, and causes Nightbane to deal 75% increased Physical damage for 10 seconds
- In combination with Костяная шрапнель this can be fatal to the tank
- Tanks should use strong active mitigation or cooldowns to survive, and healers should focus on tank healing during the buff
- Мощь преисподней will occur every 30 seconds, and deals 6 pulses of moderate AoE damage to the party over 10 seconds
- This damage is unavoidable, and can be fatal in conjunction with Воспламенение души
- Healers should use powerful AoE healing to keep the party alive through the Мощь преисподней duration
Finally, Nightbane will attack the tank with Испепеляющее дыхание approximately every 23 seconds.- Испепеляющее дыхание deals extremely heavy damage to all players in front of Nightbane
- The DPS and healer should never be in front of Nightbane
- It is unclear whether the tank can dodge this during the 2-second cast bar, or if Nightbane will follow the tank
- Tanks should use a cooldown or magic-damage mitigation abilities to reduce the damage if they cannot side-step
Phase 2: Air Phase
When Nightbane reaches 50% health, he will fly into the air and cast Костяной дождь, summoning a large skeletal golem from a plume of Shadowflame. (These flames do not deal damage to players.)
The golem, [Bonecurse], has approximately 63 million health. Nightbane remains airborne until Bonecurse has been defeated.
Bonecurse has a single ability, Поглощение жизненной силы, that he will cast on a random target every 20 seconds.- Поглощение жизненной силы will absorb the next ~1.2 million healing dealt to the targeted player
- This debuff lasts for 18 seconds or until the absorption shield has been fully depleted
- While Поглощение жизненной силы is active, the target will take light damage every 3 seconds
- This damage heals Bonecurse for 5 times the amount of damage dealt
- Over the course of the debuff's 18-second duration, this may add up to almost 10% of Bonecurse's health
- Healers should switch to the Поглощение жизненной силы target and heal away the debuff quickly
- The targeted player should also use any self-healing abilities to help remove the shield
During this phase, Nightbane will no longer use Горящие кости, Испепеляющее дыхание, Средоточие мощи, Воспламенение души, or Мощь преисподней. He will continue to create Опаленная земля beneath a random target's feet, and increases the frequency to every 12 seconds. In addition, he gains a new ability, Зазубренные осколки.- Зазубренные осколки occurs every 8-9 seconds during Phase 2, dealing light damage to all players and leaving a debuff
- The Зазубренные осколки debuff stacks, reducing movement speed by 5% per stack and dealing increasing periodic damage
- Зазубренные осколки has no duration and will persist until the end of the encounter
- Players must defeat Bonecrush quickly in order to limit the number of Зазубренные осколки stacks the party will gain
In addition, Nightbane will frequently summon a Restless Bones add every 8-10 seconds. Like the Restless Bones in Phase 1, these are fairly trivial mobs that deal light melee damage and detonate upon death with Костяная шрапнель. Space out their deaths so that the tank does not gain too many stacks of Костяная шрапнель while also dealing with Bonecurse's damage.
Continue kiting Bonecurse in the same fashion as Nightbane, to keep the Опаленная земля pools under control. It is possible to begin doubling back if necessary, since the Опаленная земля patches from the start of Phase 1 should have despawned by the middle of Phase 2.
Phase 3: Ground Phase
When Bonecrush is defeated, Nightbane will land and resume using his ground phase abilities. He also gains one new ability, Раскатистый рев.- Раскатистый рев will fear all players for 3 seconds
- The spell will also reduce player movement speed by 85%
- The first Раскатистый рев will occur ~20 seconds into Phase 3, and Nightbane will cast it every 45 seconds thereafter
- For most of the party, this is only an inconvenience; but it can be fatal for the tank, if the fear turns the tank's back to Nightbane
- Tanks should use Active Mitigation or a cooldown just before the Раскатистый рев cast bar finishes
- Healers should top up the tank before Раскатистый рев is cast
- DPS may wish to save their long/powerful cooldowns for after the first Раскатистый рев ends, so they do not lose any damage
Any players with a fear immunity should use it in advance of the first Раскатистый рев, in hopes of defeating Nightbane before the second cast.
Other than this mechanic, Phase 3 plays out with the same timers and mechanics as Phase 1, but with the added damage from Зазубренные осколки stacks that have carried over from the previous phase. Healers should use their strongest CDs to deal with Phase 3 damage.
Tank Responsibilities:- Move Nightbane away from nearby patches of Опаленная земля, but go slowly to conserve space
- Use Active Mitigation or a cooldown for Испепеляющее дыхание damage
- Use Active Mitigation or a cooldown when Nightbane gains Средоточие мощи, especially if you have stacks of Костяная шрапнель
- Interrupt Reverberating Shadows when possible
- Pick up the Restless Bones that spawn when Горящие кости drops off or during phase 2
- Move Bonecurse away from Опаленная земля patches as they spawn
- During Phase 3, use a cooldown just before the Раскатистый рев cast completes
Damage-Dealer Responsibilities:- Save cooldowns for phase 3 to align with Героизм/ Жажда крови/ Искажение времени
- Use a defensive cooldown if targeted by Горящие кости, to make its damage survivable
- Interrupt Reverberating Shadows when possible
- If targeted by Воспламенение души, step into a patch of Опаленная земля to lower your health, so its detonation deals trivial damage
- Quickly kill the Restless Bones as they spawn, and use CC or AoE stuns to keep them under control
- During phase 2, kill Restless Bones with passive cleave/AoE while primarily attacking Bonecurse
- Time your cooldowns in Phase 3 around the Раскатистый рев mechanic
- Do not stand in front or behind of Nightbane, to avoid Испепеляющее дыхание and Удар хвостом
- Move out of Опаленная земля patches as they spawn
